Mindful Motherhood: Cassandra Vieten

i think this is great reading material for mothers of all ages

"Mindful awareness recognizes that each experience is temporary, and with practice, you can learn to ride the waves of everyday life, allowing each one to arise, peak, and pass away, as all experiences do. Mindful awareness can help you notice and derive greater enjoyment from the simple, subtle pleasures of life as a mom – the way the light shines on your little one’s fuzzy head, or the grasp of his hand on your finger - no matter what else may be going on."

THE GEOMETRY OF PASTA

The Geometry of Pasta - BUSIATI

Pasta is a simple thing but getting it absolutely right depends as much on choosing the best pasta shape for the sauce as on cooking it properly.

Each shape of pasta has a subtly different role to play. An Italian might say that understanding this is an innate skill that is difficult for the non-Italian to acquire. We politely disagree.

Our book, THE GEOMETRY OF PASTA shows you how to develop an instinct for matching pasta and sauce. We explain how to team up pasta with sauce to maximise taste and texture and to turn you from an average into a great pasta cook. This website is a taste of what you will find in the book.

'The Geometry of Pasta is exactly what I would expect it to be: stylish, greed-inducing, knowledgeable and witty; an instant classic.' Nigella Lawson

Bridge to Terabithia

JP: In a lot of your speeches, you have given Dad a lot of credit for being one of the greatest influences on you as a writer. I mean, I like Dad and everything, but how does that work?

KP: Well, I was growing up in the '50s where proper women stayed home, had children and didn't do anything but take care of the house, the children and be loving wives. Your father, when he asked me to marry him, said, "I know you're a very strong woman with your own gifts, and I am not going to stop you, so I will help you." And he didn't know he was creating a Frankenstein monster, but he's always stood by that and has always helped me. And he's always stood by me and has been my biggest cheerleader.

Miroslav Sasek

An interview with Miroslav Sasek (1969)

"Janet Schulman, Macmillan's Marketing Manager, called me to say, "Guess who's in New York City? Miroslav Sasek! . He'll be here for a few weeks before returning to Munich, Germany!"

I immediately telephoned the Roger Williams Hotel in mid-town Manhattan and made an appointment to see him. When I arrived, Mr. Sasek was waiting for me in the lobby. "Would you like to see some pictures of Washington, D. C.?" he asked with his European accent. "Come up to the room!"

The first thing one notices about Mr. Sasek is his European manner. Despite his age, he is thin, well-tailored, and as bubbly as a glass of the best French champagne. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, he was forced to leave that country when the Communists seized power after World War II. He became a resident of Paris, France. "I'm at home in Paris," he stated, "I love it! I live in Munich now because my wife's work is there."

Sir Ken Robinson is author of Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative, and a leading expert on innovation and human resources. moomin / Tove Jansson

Tove Jansson / 1914 – 2001
was a Finnish novelist, painter, illustrator and comic strip author.
She was the author of, among other works, the Moomin books.

The Moomin books combine thoughtful and touching stories with beautiful illustrations.

Aside from Jansson’s own books, there have been “licensed” books based on the Japanese animated television show, but Jansson’s own books are the real thing.

Eric Carle

Eric Carle’s art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images. Many of his books have an added dimension—die-cut pages, twinkling lights as in The Very Lonely Firefly, even the lifelike sound of a cricket’s song as in The Very Quiet Cricket - giving them a playful quality: a toy that can be read, a book that can be touched. Children also enjoy working in collage and many send him pictures they have made themselves, inspired by his illustrations. He receives hundreds of letters each week from his young admirers.

D.I.Y kids

D.I.Y. Kids aims to trigger imaginative play, without requiring fees, teams, or a minivan. It’s for parents, teachers, aunts and uncles, friends and baby-sitters, neighbors and citizens—anyone who wants to create a better world not only for, but also with, the next generation. Most of all, it’s for kids who want to make their mark (and make a difference) by exercising the arts of design with wit, intelligence, and style.
